When is the best time to fly?
Any season is great time to fly over New England. Whether you fly in the morning or afternoon, you will experience spectacular views.
Are cameras allowed on board?
Yes, please bring your camera. Just make sure its batteries are charged and that you have plenty of film/disk space available.
What camera lens is best to use on the flight?
We recommend a lens of around 35mm. This approximates the field of view of the human eye. As the lens becomes progressively wider the picture will appear further away. Conversely, a telephoto lens narrows field of view and is usually not what you want in your scenic, aerial photograph.
How fast will it go?
The normal cruising speed is 110-130 mph.
What happens if the engine fails?
The engine will automatically disengage from the rotor system. The rotor blades will continue to turn at normal operating speeds, allowing the pilot to make a fully controlled landing. This procedure is called Autorotation. Unlike a conventional plane, the helicopter will touch down with little or no forward movement, and in a relatively small space.
Why are helicopters so expensive?
The helicopter is a very complex aircraft with many moving parts. It requires a great deal of engineering, testing and quality control to assure maximum safety and reliability. The production rate of a helicopter is low which keeps the unit price much higher than a mass produced vehicle such as the automobile.
What are the benefits of helicopters?
Helicopters are able to take off and land vertically, hover or fly at very low speeds and rotate 360 degrees while hovering, giving passengers panoramic views. Helicopters are often called upon in emergencies in remote areas virtually inaccessible by fixed-wing aircraft.
If I book two seats on a "Per Seat" tour, will other people be on board?
Yes, there might be another party of two on board. If you prefer not to have another party on board, then you might want to upgrade to a "Private Tour".
What is a Private Tour?
During a Private Tour, you have the whole helicopter for yourself, no other party will be on board. You are booking the helicopter for a flate rate, regardless of how many passengers are on board (helicopter holds up to four passengers). In addition, there are no restrictions on departure time, you may fly at anytime, including sunset and night. All tours, Best of Boston, Eleven Lighthouses and New England's Best, are available as Private Tours. If you are a party of two, you will appreciate the privacy. If you are a party of three or four, you will automatically receive an upgrade to a Private Tour. See Private Tours for more details.
Which helicopter will I be flying in?
The jet-powered Eurocopter EC120 is exclusively used for sightseeing tours. I.e if you booked a tour for two persons (seats), you will fly in a Eurocopter EC120 regardless if the other two seats are booked or not.
What does Part 135 certified mean?
A company, its pilots and helicopters have to be Part 135 certified before the company is allowed to carry passengers from one point to another. The FAA continously monitors a company's operations, like its compliance with pilot's rest time and compliance with its helicopter inspections. The majority of US helicopter companies are NOT Part 135 certified. In fact, Helicopter Services Boston is one of the only helicopter companies in New England certified by FAA to Part 135 Air Carrier standards.
